How old do I have to be to start driving?
Most people can start driving lessons at 17 years of age, but for anyone currently getting Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component) the age is 16. You can, however, apply for a Provisional Driving License up to three months before your 17th birthday.

How do I apply for a first provisional license & how much does it cost? If you have never held a driving license before you will need to apply for a provisional driving license. The fee is £38.00
You must:
Complete driving license application form D1 and photo card application form D750 (available from most post offices and online here). You will need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity. Any one of the following will be sufficient:- Full valid Current Passport
- Birth certificate
- Adoption certificate
- ID Card issued by a member state of the EC/EEA
- Travel Documents issued by the Home Office Certificate of Naturalisation or Registration Please note: If you have changed your name, you will also need to provide original documentary evidence to confirm your change of name i.e. Marriage Certificate, Decree Absolute or Decree Nisi papers, Deed Poll or Statutory Declaration.
- Colour photograph
- Size of image 45 mm x 35 mm
- Show the full face, with no hat, helmet or sunglasses
- Taken against a plain, evenly lit and light background.
- If you enclose a document other than a full valid current United Kingdom passport, the photograph will have to be signed on the reverse by the person who has completed section 5 of your D750 form.
How do I apply for a driving theory test & how much does it cost?
You can book your theory test online here or by telephone on 0300 200 1122. You will need your driver number (from your provisional license) and a credit/debit card to pay the appropriate fee. The fee for the combined theory and hazard perception test is £31.00.
TopCan I start driving lessons before I have passed my driving theory test?
Yes, you can start driving lessons as soon as you receive your provisional driving license and meet the relevant age requirement. We recommend that you start driving lessons before taking your theory test so that the theory and hazard perception test will make more sense.
TopWho is allowed to teach or supervise me?
- Anyone who is at least 21 years old and has held a full EC motor car license for at least 3 years can supervise and teach you, but they are not allowed to charge you a fee.
- A registered Driving Instructor, who is allowed to charge money for teaching driving lessons and supervising you.
How do I apply for a practical driving test & how much does it cost?
You can book your practical driving test online here or by telephone on 0300 200 1122. The fee for the practical driving test is £56.50 for a weekday driving test and £67.00 for a weekend driving test. You will need a credit/debit card to pay the appropriate fee and have the following information to hand:
- Your theory test pass certificate number, where applicable.
- Your driver number shown on your license.
- Your personal details (name, address, day / evening telephone numbers).
- Driving instructors code number - this ensures that they do not book two
- tests for him at the same time.
- Your preferred date and any unacceptable days or periods.
- Any disability or special circumstances.
How do I know which driving course to book?
Your ADI approved driving instructor is trained to assess each student based on their previous driving experience. The first telephone call you have with your ADI, you will be asked a series of questions to help the ADI evaluate your driving lesson requirements. With this information, your ADI can determine the best intensive driving course for you to pass your practical driving test in the shortest time possible.

Your ADI approved driving instructor will be able to advise you if you are ready to take your practical driving test. Your ADI approved driving instructor is trained to prepare you for your practical driving test in the time frame of your intensive driving course. That is why the initial telephone consultation is an essential element of choosing the right course for you.
TopWhat if I book the wrong driving course?
If your instructor feels you need more driving lessons than are available on the intensive driving course you booked, we can upgrade your course with the extra hours you need at the normal hourly driving lesson rate.
