driving test - practical driving test

The practical driving test lasts around 40 minutes and is designed to test your driving skills in normal driving conditions. Throughout the driving test you have to demonstrate to a driving examiner that you can drive safely and competently. You should have had sufficient driving lessons to prepare you fully for your driving test. IDC driving school intensive driving courses and hourly lessons are designed to give every learner driver the right number of driving lessons to meet their individual needs

The driving test begins with an eyesight check. You will need to demonstrate that you can read a number plate that is a certain distance away. If you fail the eyesight check, your driving test will not continue and you will fail.

Before you start the driving part of the driving test, you will be asked two vehicle safety check questions. Some checks could require you to open the bonnet to identify where fluid levels would be checked. If the vehicle you are using has electronic systems for monitoring these levels, it is acceptable to use those instead. You need to ensure you know how to open the bonnet and how to check the fluid levels for the car you will be using for your driving test. At IDC driving school we make sure you are fully prepared for every part of your driving test. You will not be asked to physically check the fluid levels. You will then take the driving part of the driving test. The examiner will give you directions that you should follow. During this part of the driving test you will be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises.

The reversing exercises will be chosen from:
  • Reversing around a corner
  • Turning in the road
  • Reverse parking
  • Bay parking

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop procedure at some point during your driving test. If you make a mistake during the driving test, try not to worry about it. The mistake you make might be a minor driving fault and may not affect your result. The examiners are trained to look for an overall safe standard of driving.

To pass the practical driving test you must not make any dangerous or serious faults and you must make less than 15 minor errors. If at any time the examiner feels you are a danger to other road users your driving test will be stopped.
